Kidney stones happen to about 12% of the population every year, it has happened to someone so close to me and always comes with this excruciating pain that is very unbearable.

This pain can make a grown-up man shed tears like a baby. Having witnessed what this can cause and knowing that there's a chance for someone who has had it in the past to have the stones again made me make research into how to avoid this kidney stone from happening to us. The best way to do this is to care for our bodies very well and check what we put into our mouths.

Below are some ways that you can help prevent kidney stones from happening to you:

a) Be Hydrated:

Dehydration causes a lot of harm to the body and one better way to prevent kidney stones is by staying hydrated, that is drinking enough water. Drinking at least 8 glasses of water every day has been the recommendation as doing that will make your urine not be so concentrated.

b) Less sodium and salt:

Avoid sodium and foods that contain too much salt. Too much salt in your urine will make it harder for your body to re-absorb calcium back into the blood.

c) Consume Foods rich in calcium:

It is better for you to consume foods that are quite rich in calcium as they will help you a lot in battling against kidney stones. Consume foods like almonds, low-fat yogurt, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese, collard greens. These are great choices for gaining enough calcium in the body.

d) Eat Foods less in oxalate:

Since kidney stones are made of oxalate, it will be wise to avoid any foods that are high in oxalate, eating less of these foods will make your body avoid making the stones. Some of the foods to avoid are peanuts, chocolate, drinking coffee, and others.

e) Avoid Vitamin C supplements:

high intake of Vitamin C supplements can actually cause calcium oxalate. You can still eat foods that contain Vitamin C but one have to be very careful when taking its supplements.

f) Eat less animal protein:

Foods that are high in animal protein will increase your chances of having two types of stones known as uric acid and calcium oxalate. So, it is advisable for one not to eat too much of it.

Nobody actually would want to experience this pain but whatever the case, always make sure you eat a balanced diet as it will help you a lot not just in avoiding kidney stones but also in your general health well-being.
